Where did Stephen Norrington get the idea to write and make The Last Minute ?
I must admit I haven't yet had the opportunity to watch this movie, but from what I've read, it seems to be really different from the other movies Stephen has made and worked on.
Do you believe it was a personal and emotional need for Stephen to express something ? An outlet of some kind? Perhaps to show visually what he cannot verbalize?
Or was it to merely try something a bit different from his past work? |

Why make "The Last Minute"?
Subject description: speculations on SN's reasons for making the film

It's going to be difficult to get answers on this, but it should be fun to watch the topic develope. This is my favorite film of SN's and I was stunned that it turned out to be such.
I don't know if you're going to get the chance to watch the movie on your television stations, and the dvd does not subtitles, as far as I can tell.
It's largely autobiographical, but not in the traditional sense of "autobiographical". It's not the story of his life, blow by blow, although there are a lot of incidences that actually happened to him or that he observed.
Much more important than that, "The Last Minute" lets you creep in and get very close to a director who's a bit of a reclusive. He's ferocious in his honesty with himself when it comes to this film. You'll get more about SN in the way of his feelings, emotions, internal conflicts, fears, than you'll get in the way of "true" occurances in his life.
I found the director's commentary to be very important. In my opinion, (stated too often on the IMDb boards) this commentary is an extension of the film and of Stephen Norrington. It's much more than just an interesting chat session with a well-liked director. When he says something, he says it. When he says less, he actually says more. I think he made the movie to express himself, everything he found difficult to say and everything he felt he needed to explain to people. Because it is so very sweet-natured, without the usual "autobiographical" bitterness I see so often, I really think that these were his primary concerns, as opposed to him simply wanting to "vent". I could go on about these aspects, but I'll save myself.
Something I find it a little scary is how well he seems to know himself. Most of us don't know ourselves very well; it's too daunting to be that introspective about yourself. |
